ESSENTIAL DAILY DETOXING (YOUR EVERYDAY BREAKFAST) 1/3 cup Rolled Oats (Tiger Oats or Rolled Oats from a health store.) with ½tsp Linseeds (Omega 3 & 6 a bowel lubricant, NB use more if bowel not 24 hour evacuation) & 2-5 Pumpkin Seeds (de-wormer, prostate health, lubricant), then add boiling filtered water & allow to stand for 10 - 15 minutes. Add 1/4 cup of uncooked, unsweetened muesli (we recommend using 3 different kinds of muesli to add variety), 5g digestive oat bran & wheat germ and wheat bran (contains pectin, IP6 (Inositol HexaPhosphate), cellulose, hemi-cellulose, lignan gums & mucilage) fibre like a broom sweep any left over food and waste out of your body and holds moisture, add skim milk. To sweeten add honey, fructose (no sugar) & Raisins + 1 prune (5 prunes while detoxing for cancer). This breakfast will help to hydrate the waste in the intestine. Because digestive bran absorbs & holds moisture & toxins, helping sweep out toxins from the intestine, lowering pH level & promoting good intestinal flora. Dehydration makes it difficult to eject waste. This leads to haemorrhoids (swollen veins around the anus). Fibre is the way to go. Just add bran's & linseeds (bowel lubricants) until you have the correct 24 hour intestinal flow. Now you are 1/3rd of the way there; 1 meal down, just 2 to go. Fibre oat bran & oats help lower cholesterol & fat in the body as well as helping prevent colon cancer, obesity, haemorrhoids, balance sugar levels & reduce high blood pressure High in collagen for great looking skin. Stay away from processed cereals (high temperature processing kills nutrients & creates carcinogens, a large proportion of processing plants use toxic solvents to clean their machinery) & cereals advertising added vitamins & minerals, if they have to add nutrients, then the original product cannot be particularly nutritious. If constipation occurs, use 1 heaped teaspoon Epsom salts with Herbalax in a ½ cup of warm water every 4 hours & (last thing at night until flushed). You absolutely must flush at least every 24 hours. Any food in the intestine longer than 24 hours = toxic material. AVOIDING POISONS & TOXINS (THEY WILL DESTROY HEART AND BRAIN) (mothballs), Petroleum ether (in some gasoline's), Styrene (Styrofoam dishes), Toluene, Xylene (store-bought drinking water, cold cereals), obviously products properly made don't contain these toxins. All the below toxins keep out of your life , PERMANENTLY.Get all known poisons out of your house to a shed, not a garage. Household chemicals give off toxic fumes which infect your living environment. Place plants inside your house. Not only do they increase the oxygen supply and clean air but they are attractive, colourful & enhance your environment. For a comprehensive list of toxins & poisons, refer to “The Cure for All Diseases” by Dr Hulda Clark, whose research over many years brings us the sources of toxic substances (including foods, beverages, cosmetics, health & beauty products & our environment) & how to eliminate them and/or replace them with non-toxic alternatives. WILHELM ROENTGEN – HUMAN BONESDiscovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Roentgen. The ability to see human bones became a marvel but like most man created things, has turned out to be a disaster yet it is still commonly used. It became clear in 1896, a year after its discovery, that it could cause serious medical problems, burns that would not heal that required amputation and at that point the development of fatal cancers. SMOKING MIRRORSSmoking mirrors have never failed to fascinate man and when told by qualified doctors, the public line up to get treated for a malay of problems such as ringworm, acne, ovary radiation for depression and a host9 of other quackery carried out by the highly qualified who were radiating people to the point to where their hair fell out but were told that all was well. Even the 1903 Nobel prize winner, Madame Curie, died of leukaemia after playing around with this wonderful medium. Today it is prescribed for heart troubles, impotencies, ulcers, depression, arthritis, cancer, high blood pressure, blindness, tuberculosis and other ailments, even radiated toothpaste and skin creams and chocolate for rejuvenation as recent as 1952 became the in thing. X-RAYS INHERENT GENETIC DAMAGEYet in 1927, Herman James Muller demonstrated X-rays caused inherent genetic damage and received a Nobel Prize for his efforts. This didn't stop the money making machine and even today, it still rolls. The secrecy surrounding the nuclear reactors which were promised by politicians to produce electricity too cheap to monitor in 1946 have similar effect as military through the years that have been subjected to this radiation have died prematurely. In fact, the government, during Vietnam administration, had a policy of not paying compensation and it was only in 1988 that court actions enforced pay outs. GOVERNMENTS WASTEThe usual suspects are involved around these dangerous yet highly profitable ventures where governments waste millions on crack pot schemes and all feed at the trough. In 1970, it became apparent that breast cancer can be caused with as low doses of 1.6 rem and by 1977 from certain plutonium facilities people were dying from radioactive doses of 3 rem, the reason being this was accumulated over many years and stored in cells. BLIND EYE = IT'S ABOUT MONEYGovernments safety standards were 5 rem per annum yet governments have closed a blind eye to date. By 1956 Alice Stewart showed a single x-ray dose to the foetus could double the likelihood of childhood leukaemia. Oakridge studies found that children receiving 2 – 3 rems was excessive and even doses as low as ,015 rems for chest x-rays were proving to be between 130 – 200 times higher needed to produce adequate x-rays, not to mention that most people don't need x-rays that are given them. Dr John Gofman has probably done the most extensive study, his latest book Medical Radiation is one of the most important publications of 700 pages proving cancer and heart disease. He is a PHd in Nuclear and Physical Chemistry and a Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology. CHEMICALS AND DRUGS DAMAGE THE DNA (ALL OF THEM)The bottom line is radiation causes genetic mutations, (damages the DNA) like all chemicals and drugs. Calculations done by Gofman in 1993 indicate that 54% in women and 74% in men were attributed to x-rays. In other words plus minus 60% comes from x-rays. Add other nasties such as smoking or diet, inherited genetic mutations, chemicals, parasites and the numbers get even worse. Gofman calculates 53% of deaths in the USA of heart disease is not unlikely due to x-ray exposure. Non toxic cleaners etc
Oven cleaner: Sprinkle baking soda on moist surface and scrub with steel wool. Scouring powder can be made from baking soda or dry table salt. Toilet bowl cleaner can be made from straight bleach (do NOT mix with any other substance except water), baking soda and vinegar or borax and lemon juice Tub and tile cleaner can be as easy as rubbing in baking soda with a damp sponge and rinsing, or wiping with vinegar first and following with baking soda as a scourer. Cleaning windows is easy with these tips: To avoid streaks, don't wash windows when the sun is shining. Use a vinegar-and-water solution, cornstarch, vinegar-and-water solution, or lemon-juice-and-water. Wipe with newspaper. Air freshener: Distribute partially filled dishes of vinegar around the kitchen to combat unpleasant cooking odours; boil cinnamon and cloves in a pan of water to scent the air; sprinkle 1/2 cup borax in the bottom of garbage or nappy pails to inhibit mould and bacteria growth that can cause odours. All-purpose cleaner can be made from a vinegar-and-salt mixture or from 4 tablespoons baking soda dissolved in a litre of warm water. Disinfectant means anything that will reduce the number of harmful bacteria on a surface. Practically no surface treatment will completely eliminate bacteria. Try regular cleaning with soap (NOT detergent) and hot water. Or mix 1/2 cup borax into 4 litres of hot water to disinfect and deodorize. Drain cleaner: To open a blocked drain, pour 1/2 a cup of baking soda_down drain, add 1/2 cup white vinegar, and cover the drain. The resulting chemical reaction can break down fatty acids, allowing the blockage to be washed down the drain. Do not use this method after trying a commercial drain cleaner. Floor cleaner and polish: Add a few drops of vinegar in the cleaning water to remove soap traces. For vinyl or linoleum, add a capful of baby oil to the water. For wood floors, apply a thin coat of 1:1 oil and vinegar and rub in well. See also www.groundwork.org.za. HIV's Partner in CrimeLIKE MANY PERPETRATORS, HIV, the AIDS virus, is more successful when paired with a partner, research suggests. In a study of HIV-positive couples, Shyh-Ching Lo of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C., and Donald Louria at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey, found evidence indicating that HIV is more readily transmitted to people who are also infected with an obscure micro organism called Mycoplasma genitalium.
The study examined the behaviours of heterosexual couples, in which one partner was HIV positive and the other HIV negative. Tracking the participants over the course of seven years, scientists compared the experiences of couples in which the second partner became positive with those of couples whose HIV status remained the same. The researchers concluded that an important factor determining whether a partner became HIV positive was Co-infection with M. genitalium.
The idea that mycoplasmas might act as cofactors in AIDS patients goes back to the early 1980's, when Luc Montangier – the French co-finder of the HIV virus – and Lo isolated mycoplasmas from HIV-positive patients. They argued that since some women are infected after only one sexual encounter, yet only 15 percent of women who are steady partners of HIV-infected men acquire the virus, cofactors must exist that increase viral transmission.
“We don't know the exact mechanism,” says Lo, “but we know that mycoplasmas act as modulators of immune cells – they force them to divide. HIV more readily infects dividing cells, so mycoplasmas might be facilitating cellular infection” Solution doxycycline.
Deficiency Syndrome)
TRADITIONAL THINKINGAids is an immune system disorder in which the body's ability to defend itself is greatly diminished. When human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes AIDS) invades key white blood (immune) cells called T lymphocytes and multiplies, it causes a breakdown in the body's immune system, eventually leading to overwhelming infection and / or cancer – and, ultimately, to death. Most deaths among people with AIDS are not caused by AIDS itself, but by one of the many infections or cancers to which the syndrome makes the body vulnerable. Essentially, AIDS is experienced as a series of various illnesses made possible by the initial HIV infection. It is a monumental modern medical plague. The origin of HIV is unknown. The earliest documented case of AIDS appeared in 1981; however, researchers acknowledge that there may have been unidentified cases in the 1970's. Some investigators have wondered if HIV might be a genetically engineered virus gone awry. Whatever its origin, HIV is a type of virus known as a retrovirus that is spread primarily through sexual or blood-to-blood contact, such as occurs with the sharing of needles by intravenous drug users. It can also be spread by blood transfusion (now rare) or the use of blood products such as clotting factors, if the blood used for these purposes is infected. Hemophiliacs, who require a specific coagulation factor from blood concentrates, have historical been especially vulnerable to HIV. In the United States, as well as in many other parts of the world, blood is routinely screened for the presence of HIV antibodies, the warning sign of HIV infection. It is possible HIV-infected blood may occasionally pass through the careful screening processes. HIV antibodies may not appear in the blood for as much as three to six months after a person is infected, so their presence in blood taken from a person who contracted the virus recently may not appear in the blood for as much as three to six months after a person is infected, so their presence in blood taken from a person who contracted the virus recently may not be detectable. Blood products are now subjected to heat to destroy the virus, although some AIDS advocates raise concerns that this process may not be 100 percent effective. Still, according to the American Association of Blood Banks, only 1 in 676, 000 recipients currently become infected by HIV through blood transfusions. It is possible for dentists and medical workers who come into close contact with the bodily fluids of infected persons to become infected under certain conditions. This is why paramedics, emergency medical technicians, dentists and dental hygienists, hospital and clinic employees, emergency room personnel, and law enforcement officers wear rubber gloves to prevent contact with blood products or saliva. The practice of wearing gloves also protects patients. Babies of mothers with HIV can contract the virus during pregnancy or birth, or through breastfeeding, although this is not inevitable. In fact, statistics indicate that most such babies do not contract the virus themselves. A surgeon General's report on HIV and AIDS estimated about 25 percent of these babies do become infected, either before or during birth. Scientists do not know what factors influence whether or not a child will become infected, either before or during birth. Scientists do not know what factors influence whether or not a child will become infected, either before or during birth. Scientists do not know what factors influence whether or not a child will become infected but are working diligently to find the answers. It is known that the use of drug therapy during pregnancy plus bottle-feeding after birth may dramatically decrease the likelihood of mother –to-baby transmission. Many people who are infected with HIV are not even aware that they have it. While some people experience a mild flulilke illness within two to four weeks of exposure to the virus, it generally takes at least two to five years before any symptoms of HIV infection and a positive diagnosis of AIDS has been estimated to be between two and ten years or more.
The virus does not lie dormant during this time, however. Instead, it immediately attacks the immune system. The virus quickly begins producing a billion copies of itself each day, which in turn forces the human immune system to produce the same number of antibodies, an attempted defence against the introducers. Year after year, the body struggles to beat the virus until finally, the overworked immune system simply wears out and AIDS results. In many cases, the first symptoms of HIV and AIDS are non-specific and variable. One of the most common is a tongue coated with white bumps. This is oral thrush, or candidiasis, Candidiasis indicates a compromised immune system. Intestinal parasites are another common problem. Other possible symptoms include: · Prolonged, unexplained fatigue. · Swollen glands (lymph nodes). · Unexplained fever lasting more than ten days. · Excessive sweating (especially at night). · Mouth lesions, including thrush and painful, swollen gums. · Sore throat. · Cough. · Shortness of breath. · Changes in bowel habits, including constipation. · Frequent diarrhea. · Symptoms of a specific opportunistic infection. · Tumor (Kaposi's sarcoma). · Skin rashes or lesions of various types. · Unintentional weight loss. · General discomfort or uneasiness (malaise). · Headache Additional symptoms that may be associated with HIV and / or AIDS include speech impairment, memory loss, joint swelling, joint pain, bone pain or tenderness, a lump or lumps in the groin, blurred vision, genital sores, muscle atrophy, decreasing intellectual function, joint stiffness, unusual or strange behaviour, anxiety, stress tension, pruritus (generalized itching), sensitivity to light, decreased vision or blindness, blind spots in the field of vision, and chest pain. No one should assume he or she is infected with HIV just because he or she has one or more of the above symptoms. These symptoms can be related to many illnesses, so being tested for HIV is the only way to be sure. This can be done by a doctor or with a home HIV testing kit. Simple to perform, this test requires a very small blood sample, obtained by pricking a fingertip. The sample is mailed to a laboratory, which analyzes it and offers a diagnosis by telephone in a matter of days. Each test is identified by a code number (no personal information is attached to any sample), so the test and the results are completely confidential. To date, the FDA has approved only one home test kit, the Home Access Corporate. Beware of fraudulent or unproven home HIV test kits. Doctors say if a kit claims to provide “instant” test results through a visual indicator such as a colored dot on a piece of paper after saliva has been applied, the outcome may be unreliable. If you believe you have used a questionable test kit, contact your doctor for another test or use the approved test kit. Testing HIV-positive does not mean that one has AIDS. Rather, it means that one has been exposed to HIV, as demonstrated by the presence in the blood of antibodies to the virus. However, a confirmed positive HIV test result is often the earliest indication that the person may eventually develop AIDS. The medical criteria for a diagnosis of full blown AIDS are quite specific, requiring the presence of one or more opportunistic infections or cancers known to be associated with HIV infection. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these include:
While the list is not all-inclusive, these are the more common AIDS-defining illnesses. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia alone accounts for over 50 percent of initial AIDS-defining conditions. Some authorities believe that, although strongly linked to HIV, AIDS must be considered a disease caused by many factors. It may be that HIV is necessary but not sufficient to cause the onset of AIDS; that is, the virus needs help in bringing about immune deficiency. For example, epidemiologists have observed that those infected with both HIV and another retrovirus, such as the less frequently seen but similarly transmitted human T cell llllumphoma virus (HTLV), with HIV alone. Conversely, some people with signs of full-blown generalized immune deficiency, consistent with a diagnosis of AIDS, actually test negative for HIV antibodies. To date, only 50 to 60 percent of individuals exposed to HIV, as documented by an antibody test, have actually developed AIDS. But some people carry the virus for many years and never develop any symptoms of immune deficiency. We believe a person who becomes infected with HIV is more likely to go on to develop AIDS if his or her immune system is severely suppressed by other factors at the same time of exposure and later. The risk of developing AIDS is proportional to the degree of immune suppression and the amount and duration of exposure to HIV. If the immune system is functioning well, it may be possible to avoid developing, AIDS, even if one is a member of a high-risk group. Studies have repeatedly shown that immune-compromised persons are at greatest risk of contracting AIDS. HIV is highly adaptable and capable of changing its form. According to scientists at Oxford University in England, this may be the key to its survival. They say that through subtle mutations, or changes in its genetic structure, HIV evades ultimately defuses the body's mechanisms for the elimination of infected cells. As a result, it continues to survive despite the immune system's aggressive attacks. Meanwhile, studies conducted at the Pasteur Institute indicate that the virus may be more hardy and virulent than we have ever been told. Health authorities have long maintained that the AIDS virus cannot survive without a host, but the Pasteur Institute researchers demonstrated that HIV can survive outside the body, and that it can live for up to eleven days in untreated sewage. Apparently, HIV is not as fragile as has been thought. While there are varying points of view, we believe it is possible that the virus may live for many days outside the body, even in a dried, inactive state, and then become infectious again. At this time, there is no cure for AIDS. In the United States alone, approximately 2 million people are infected with HIV. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 62 percent of Americans diagnosed with AIDS since 1981 have died. AIDS is now a leading cause of premature death among Americans. In this country, it tends to disproportionately affect members of minority communities, especially African-American males and the third leading cause of death among African-American females. Those who abuse drugs and those who engage in sexual intercourse (anal, oral, or vaginal) with persons whose sexual or drug history places them at risk of HIV. AIDS education seems to have had some impact on the spread of the virus in the United States, but in recent years the number of new cases among young people has been rising again, even though they grew up in an atmosphere of widespread concern and awareness about AIDS. The highest percentage of AIDS cases reported to date, approximately 8,400 were children under the age of thirteen. Among adolescents ages thirteen to nineteen, to note, unfortunately, is that, as of 1999, nearly 25,000 Americans aged twenty to twenty-four had been diagnosed with AIDS. Worldwide, over 33 million people are carrying the HIV virus, and more than 15 million have died of complications of AIDS. In Africa and Southeast Asia, roughly 16,000 new infections occur each day. Alarmingly, Time magazine has reported that an estimated 20 million people living outside industrialized countries are infected with HIV, and most of these cases are due to a different strain of the virus than cases commonly studied in the United States and Europe. Anyone with HIV or AIDS can make a major contribution to his or her survival and quality of life by getting into an early treatment program, especially a program in which immune enhancement is encouraged. People with HIV or AIDS need higher than normal amounts of all nutrients because malabsorption is a common problem. Those at risk of becoming infected with HIV or of developing AIDS can also be helped through the following program. Those at risk of becoming infected with HIV or of developing AIDS can also be helped though the following program. For all nutritional supplements, we strongly recommend the use of sublingual and injectable forms, as well as rectal suppositories, if available, for improved absorption. Many of the nutrients listed below can be found in combination formulas. A high-potency multivamin and mineral supplement should be included as well. Be sure to check the amounts of different nutrients in the complex against those in the table below. Use sublingual, liquid, and powdered supplements for best absorption. (See Malabsorption syndrome in Part Two) Unless otherwise specified, the dosages recommended in this section are for adults. For a child between the ages of twelve and seventeen reduce the dose to three-quarters the recommended amount. For a child between six and twelve, use only the recommended dose, and for a child under the age of six, use one-quarter the recommended AMOUNT

q
St. John's Wort contains two substances, hypericin and pseudohypericin, that inhibit retroviral infections and could be useful in the treatment of AIDS.
q
Siberian ginseng helps bronchial disorders and boosts energy. Caution: Do not use this herb if you have hypoglycaemia, high blood pressure, or a heart disorder.
q
Echinacea is an immune stimulant, and should be avoided. In fact, it stimulates replication of T cells, which in turn enhances replication of the virus, according to Dr Tieraona Low Doq, founder of the New Herb Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Caution: Do not make Echinacea if you have an autoimmune disorder. RECOMMENDATIONSIf you test positive for HIV, arrange for repeat testing as soon as you can to rule out the possibility of a false-positive result. If the initial result is confirmed, immediately begin taking measures to boost your immune system. This is the single most important factor in disease prevention, and it is the best defence for the person with HIV. Correct diet, appropriate supplements, exercise, stress reduction, a proper environment, and a healthy mental outlook all play significant roles in keeping the immune system working adequately. q Pay special attention to meeting your nutritional needs and requirements and keep in mind that a higher that normal intake of nutrients will probably be necessary. q Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat a diet consisting of 75 percent raw foods, organically grown if possible (avoid foods that have been treated with pesticides and other sprays), plus lentils, beans, seeds, nuts, and whole grains, including brown rice and millet, and also non acid-forming fruit such as bananas, all berries, peaches, apples, and melons, Raw foods are particularly important because cooking depletes foods of their vital enzymes. q Eat plenty of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, yellow and deep-orange vegetables such as carrots, pumpkin, squash, and yams. q Consume plenty of fresh live juices. Juicing is extremely beneficial for supplying nutrients. “Green drinks” made from leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and beet greens, and carrot and beet root juice, should be consumed on a daily basis, with garlic and onion added. q Cooking tomatoes rather than eating them raw has been show to more than double the effectiveness of the lycopene tomatoes contain. Lycopene, a phytochemical found in tomatoes, has been found to reduce the risk of prostate and lung cancer. The incidence of digestive cancers, such as those of the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, colon, intestines, and rectum, may also be lowered with correct dosages of lycopene. A study reported in the December 1995 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found a 45-percent lower risk of prostate cancer in men who regularly consumed ten or more servings of tomatoes or tomato-based foods per week than in those who did not. q Drink steam-distilled water only (not tap water), and lots of it-eight or more 8-ounce glasses daily – to flush toxins from the body. All cells and organ systems need water. Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty. The organs, and especially the brain, become dehydrated long before thirst develops. q Eat unripened papaya (including a few of the seeds), fresh pineapple, and Aspergillus oryzae (a type of fungus) frequently. These foods are good sources of proteolytic enzymes, which are crucial for proper digestion of foods and assimilation of nutrients. Without enzymes, the body cannot be supplied with the energy it needs for its activities. Enzymes can also be taken in supplement form. These help in digestion in the lower stomach and intestinal tract. q Eat onions and garlic, or take garlic in supplement form. q Add shiitake, reishi, and maitake mushrooms to the diet, or take them in supplement form. q Limit your intake of soybeans and soy products, which contain enzyme inhibitors. Do not completely eliminate them from your diet, however, as they are valuable sources of protein. q Eliminate from you diet colas, foods with additives and colourings, junk foods, peanuts, processed refined foods, saturated fats, salt, sugar and sugar products, white flour, all animal protein, and anything containing caffeine. q Take supplemental fibre daily. Alternate between psyllium husks and freshly ground flaxseeds. Take psyllium with a glass of water and drink it quickly before it thickens. Note: Always take supplemental fiber separately from other supplements and medications. q Exercise caution in your choice of foods so as to avoid exposure to foodborne illness. Food poisoning can be very dangerous for people with HIV or AIDS infection. q Do not smoke, and stay away from those who do. q Avoid alcohol, noxious chemicals, and anything else than can damage the liver. q Try using bee propolis and royal jelly to fight bacterial infections invading the lungs, mouth, throat, and mucous membranes. q Obtain as much fresh air and rest as possible, and moderate amounts of sunshine. q Use coffee or fresh wheatgrass retention enemas to eliminate toxins and supply nutrients. q Determine what food sensitivities or allergies may be present. The best way to do this is to have yourself tested by a health care professional It is important to eliminate allergenic foods from the diet because they wreak havoc in the body, causing damage to the immune system. q Always use a condom and spermicide (spermicide kills HIV) for any sexual contact. If you use a lubricant with a latex condom, use only a water-based lubricant such as K-Y jelly. Do not use petroleum jelly (Vaseline), vegetable shortening (Crisco), hand lotion, or baby oil, as these substances can break down latex in a matter of minutes. Be aware, however, that even the proper use of a condom is not a guarantee against the transmission of HIV. q Seek out the care of a qualified health care provider – if possible, one who has a great deal of experience, in treating people with HIV. Research shows the length of survival of a person with AIDS is closely linked to how much his or her physician knows about treating the condition. The median length of survival after diagnosis is twenty-six months for those whose doctors have the most experience with AIDS, compared with fourteen months for those whose doctors have the least experience with AIDS. q Educate yourself. HIV and AIDS are complicated conditions, and treatment options are constantly changing and expanding. In order to stay well, it is vital to be as informed as possible. CONSIDERATIONSq Ever since the AIDS epidemic began, researchers have been looking for a “magic bullet” – a single miracle drug to combat the virus, or a vaccine to seek out and destroy the virus in the bloodstream and lymphatic system. Research into this filed is promising, however, and existing therapies almost guarantee that people with AIDS will live much longer and more productive lives than was once the case. q For persons infected with HIV, the most logical approach to staying well is to eliminate all known causes of immune suppression and to implement the use of therapies that inhibit viral activity and stimulate immune function. q Research has shown that dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a hormone may enhance the functioning of the immune system. q Human growth hormone (HGH) therapy has been shown to help prevent and/or reverse wasting syndrome. This treatment must be given under a doctor's supervision. q Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is sometimes used, together with medications and other treatments, to help overcome opportunistic infections associated with AIDS. q N-acetylcysteine and L-Carnitine both show some promise in the ability to prevent and counteract the extreme weight loss common in people with AIDS. q Chicoric acid, a compound found in unroasted coffee beans, has been shown to inhibit the AIDS virus by blocking an enzyme the deadly virus uses to enter human cells. q Maitake extract can help T cells in cell cultures from being destroyed by HIV by as much as 97 percent in vitro (in a test tube), according to researches. The FDA-approved Phase II clinical trials of Maitake in 1998. q People with AIDS are almost always underweight and often have malabsorption problems that contribute to malnutrition, which is common in people with AIDS. A lack of quality protein and adequate calories is a common reason for immune deficiency. q Researchers are studying the effects of phytonutrients in the blue-green algae spirulina s potential weapons in the fight to cure AIDS. Initial studies indicate these compounds tend to prevent the AIDS virus from attaching to or penetrating cells. Spirulina is also a good supplement for maintaining energy. q The only truly safe sex is between life partners who are HIV-free. Other than that, abstinence is the only way to avoid any chance of infection with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Changing partners particularly puts one at risk, and any exchange of bodily fluids is theoretically risky. A recent report claims that HIV can even be contracted through kissing if you have gum disease. q There are thousands of AIDS survivors (epidemiologists call them long term progressors) who are free from all symptoms and lead absolutely normal lives years after being identified as HIV-positive As reported at the World AIDS Conference in Japan in 1994, there are at least 10,000 such people worldwide, and they are being studied intensively. A key to the AIDS cure may reside in these people, some of who have had HIV for over ten years and who nevertheless remain healthy. Many thousands will continue to be HIV-positive, they apparently no longer have the virus present in their bodies. The medical community is amazed by this, and doctors continue to monitor the blood of such people frequently. For more information about this, read They Conquered AIDS! True Life Adventures by Scott Gregory and Bianca Leonardo (True Life Publications, 1989) q Standard medical approaches to treatment of HIV focus on using drugs to try to block replication of the virus and thus slow the progression of disease, plus taking aggressive measures as needed to fight opportunistic infections and cancers. Medial science has probably had more success finding ways to defeat opportunistic infections than in combating the virus directly, research continues on both fronts and progress is being made. One currently accepted element of anti-HIV drug treatment is a combination therapy approach, or the use of two or more drugs that act in different ways. Combination therapy is often more effective than the use of any single medication or type of medication. q Most of the agents now widely used to target HIV fall into one of two categories: · Nucleoside analogues. These drugs work by taking the place of one of the building blocks of the virus's attempts to reproduce. Most of these drugs are commonly known by initials or combinations of letters and numbers deprived from their original chemical names. Examples include Zidovudine (Retrovir), better known as AZT, Zalcitabine (HIVID), better known as ddC; didanosine (Videx), better knows as ddI; stavudine (Zerit), better known as d4T; and fist drug to be approved for use against HIV and has been the primary drug used to treat HIV infection ever since. It also has shown considerable effectiveness in preventing the transmission of the virus from an infected woman to a foetus during pregnancy and birth. The other nucleoside analogues were originally conceived as alternatives to AZT, but have since been found to work well with AZT in many cases. These drugs appear to prolong survival and delay the progression from the asymptomatic stage of HIV infection to full-blown AIDS, at least in some individuals. They can be used singly or in combination with each other (usually AZT plus one or more drugs). Drawbacks include potential toxicity (especially in the case of AZT) and unpleasant side effect. In addition, the virus eventually develops resistance to these drugs, usually after a year or more of therapy. · Protease inhibitors. These drugs that bind to and block the action of a viral enzyme, protease, that plays a central role in the replication of HIV. If protease is prevented from exerting its normal action, the virus cannot reproduce. This class of drugs has shown great promise, at least in some studies, as a treatment for HIV infection. They are often used as an adjunct to treatment with AZT or another of the nucleoside analogues. Examples of protease inhibitors include indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinivir (Invirase), and agenerase (Amprenavir). q There are different theories and some conflicting evidence about when to initiate treatment with nucleoside analogues and/or protease inhibitors, as well as about which agents are most effective (and for whom). Individual practitioners differ in their views on these issues. In addition, because of the tremendous amount or research being done on AIDS and its potential treatments, new possibilities for drugs and approaches to different aspects of the disease are emerging all the time. It is vital to work with a health care professional whose experience and judgment you trust. q Some directions of antiviral drug research now being pursued include the following:
q It is hoped that as scientists develop newer and more effective means of attacking the virus at various points in its life cycle, it will be come possible to combine them in such a way that long-term suppression of the virus can be achieved – in effect, turning AIDS into a chronic but manageable illness rather than a terminal one. The principal unanswered question is whether, if near-perfect viral suppression does become reality, the immune system will be capable of restoring itself. The data are not yet clear on this point, though evidence from protease inhibitor studies has been encouraging. At the very least, it is fair to say that the new generation of antiviral drugs and their combinations is bringing a new era of hope in the fight against AIDS. q In some test subjects given ”AIDS cocktails” containing mixtures of two, three, or more anti-AIDS drugs, the amount of HIV present in the body was dramatically reduced. Researchers theorize that if given early enough, potent combination treatments may someday even be able to eliminate the virus and allow the immune system to recover. q The FDA has joined the CDC and the American Dental Association in urging dentists to autoclave – sterilize by steam under pressure – dental hand pieces and accessories between patients to remove possible contaminants. In addition, the FDA requires that all such equipment be designed to withstand autoclaving, and the labelling must include instruction for the sterilization process. While most dentists are believed to comply with the recommendations for autoclaving, it's a good idea to ask what preventive measures a dentist follows before making an appointment. Approximately 128 Americans have been infected with HIV through a dentist or doctor. q It is not possible to contract HIV by donating blood. Blood donors do not come in contact with the blood of other persons, and only sterile materials, including single use, disposable needles, are used to collect blood donations. Persons at risk of having HIV or AIDS should not donate blood, however. Many doctors recommend autologous donation - having some of your own blood collected and stored – in advance of planned surgery that will (or may) necessitate a transfusion. q Worldwide efforts to eradicate HIV through research, drugs, vaccines, health programmes, and nutrition are unprecedented. New drug and nutrient therapies offer more hoe than ever before to those living with HIV and AIDS. Current drug therapies are making progress in bringing the disease under control. For example, the number of HIV-related deaths in the United States decreased from 16,516 in 1997 to 13,210 in 1998. For the first time since 1987, AIDS dropped out of the top fifteen causes of death in America. With this increased hope come some new concerns, however. Researchers are tabulating an increase in the number of highly resistant strains of the AIDS virus that render the powerful drug “cocktail” combinations ineffective. In an alarming 10 to 50 percent of these cases, high levels of the virus return. It is estimated that 4.5 percent of the 40,000 new HIV infections each year are resistant to current drugs. Another concern is that, lulled into a false sense of security by the drugs' abilities to subdue the virus, some people either forget to take their medications regularly or quit altogether, only to have illness flare up again. And in the meantime, when they are feeling better, they may unthinkingly infect their sex partners as well. Scientists also disagree over the definition of resistance. One group classifies resistance as a threefold increase in HIV's ability to withstand a certain drug, while another considers a strain resistant at ten times its former ability to withstand AIDS medications. If a drug combination is not effective, even though a person has been taking his or her medication faithfully, more testing is needed to determine how the combinations can be reformulated. q Chronic, recurring vaginal yeast infections should be checked by a doctor. This can be a sign of HIV infection. q Findings from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine indicate that HIV can evade even the most powerful antiviral drugs and remain hidden until the immune system is compromised, such as with an infection. Doctors believe it may be possible to eliminate the hidden virus by tricking the body into fighting it. |
